The history of industrial New York is deeply etched along the banks of this waterway separating the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. Today it is among the most polluted creeks in the nation owing to a legacy of industry dating long before the environmental movement. With 4 miles of protected shore line, extensive rail connections and proximity to Manhattan, Newtown Creek was a natural place for industry to thrive in the mid-19th century. The former salt marsh transformed into an industrial canal and soon was home to some of the dirtiest businesses in the city. Oil refineries, glue factories, tanneries and copper refineries sprouted up along the creek into the 20th leaving a toxic legacy that lingers underneath the ground. > by Noah Devereaux

During transport 500,000 liters of diesel is saved and lastly,
by replacing traditional shopping bags the difference in weight will save almost 275 tons of plastic.
That’s only one brand, I hope others will follow.

The Places We Live (an interactive exhibition produced in cooperation with the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo) renders the day to day portrait of sixteen households located in 4 slums:
Caracas-Venezuella, Kibera-Nairobi-Kenya, Dharavi-Mumbai-India, Jakarta-Indonesia.
Life size images and audio segments in the exhibition help create the experience of a personal encounter with the slum dwellers. Each slum is represented by one room, where all four walls are built out of rear-projection canvas.

Even though it is the richest city of india, about two-thirds of its residents live in poverty, or slums.
Dharavi, Mumbai’s most infamous slum, is home to about one million residents living off the official city grid.
It is likely to vanish within a decade to make way to middle class apartment blocks.

Every square mile of ocean contains 50 000 pieces of trash
and 1 000 miles north of Hawaii there is a floating layer of debris the size of the continental United States.

Reminds me of the work of Chris Jordan > Midway

These photographs of albatross chicks were made in September, 2009, on Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral near the middle of the North Pacific. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking.

These images depict the actual stomach contents of baby birds in one of the world’s most remote marine sanctuaries, more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent.

Nadav Kander is the winner of the Prix Pictet 2009.
He received the CHF100,000 from Kofi Annan at the Passage de Retz, Paris, on 22 October 2009.
At the same time Ed Kashi was selected to complete the Prix Pictet Commission 2009.

Water is probably one of the most precious resources and vital for everyone’s everyday life. In spite of this obvious fact, people use large amounts of water: drinking, cooking and washing, but even more for producing things such as food, paper, cotton clothes, etc.

One of the most important research papers in this field is Chapagain, A.K. and Hoekstra, A.Y. (2004), »Water footprints of nations«, Value of Water Research Report Series No. 16, UNESCO-IHE, Delft, the Netherlands.
Designer Timm Kekeritz created a poster, visualizing parts of their research data, to make the issue of virtual water and the water footprint perceptible.

The water footprint of a person, company or nation is defined as the total volume of freshwater that is used to produce the commodities, goods and services consumed by the person, company or nation.
The idea of the water footprint is quite similar to the ecological footprint, but focussing on the use of water.

Tous les créatifs connaissent jusqu’à un certain point le travail de Sagmeister > On aime, on aime pas, mais personne reste indifférent. Depuis longtemps Sagmeister travaille sa griffe avec une certaine dévotion particulière, ce qui lui merite une notoriété dans le monde du design graphique, de la pub. La récente pub Absolute ANTHEM est incontestablement une “inspicopie” des expérimentations typographiques de Stefan Sagmeister par l’agence TBWA\CHIAT\DAY New York.

Maintenant le débat est ouvert; Est-ce que la popularité d’un style ou d’un artiste justifie l’appropriation de sa démarche artistique dans le processus de commercialisation publicitaire?

Dans un monde gris je vois souvent noir…
